In the light of fierce competition among MP3 players producers,M&D Market Research Company has conducted a survey on satisfaction of users of MP3 players in order to understand the preference of consumers. Facing the competition from iGADGET MP3 players and declining the market shares, the survey results are analyzed so as to find out the issues.

The findings for this survey are based upon market research carried out with 200 users of both H&F and iGADGET MP3 players in February 2011 respectively. A total of 400 consumers were interviewed and asked to complete a questionnaire on the design, quality and function of MP3 players of H&F and iGADGET.
3.Findings 3.1 Overall
In general, only half of the users of H&F users are satisfied with the overall performance while around 60% of users iGADGET are satisfied. The satisfaction of H&F MP3 players users towards sound quality and battery life is high, over four-fifths of them are satisfied with the sound quality and about two-thirds of them are satisfied with the battery life of H&F MP3 players.
3.2 Design
Under half of the users are satisfied with the design H&F MP3 players while over four-fifths of users are satisfied with the design of iGADGET MP3 players. The findings indicate that users do not the size of H&F MP3 player is not as light as iGADGET MP3 players. Furthermore, the choice of colors of H&F MP3 players is limited, only black and white can be chosen. Instead, iGADGET MP3 players has a wide range of colors to be chosen by users.

Only a third of users of H&F MP3 players are satisfied with the headphone quality while more than a third of users are satisfied with the headphone quality of iGADGET MP3 players. The findings implies that the headphones will be easily broken and is quite fragile. Since the headphones are made in Malaysia, the materials, the materials used may not be durable, while headphones of iGADGET MP3 players are made in Korea where the materials used is more durable. As a result, more users are satisfied with the headphone quality of iGADGET MP3 players.

Less than two-fifths of users are satisfied with the function of H&F MP3 players while over 60% of users are satisfied with the function of iGADGET MP3 players. The reason for this was the inability of user-friendly compared to iGADGET MP3 players. H&F MP3 players need to install software to transfer music files whereas iGADGET simply uses drag-and-drop. A result of this is lower users’ satisfaction of our product, and they may tend to buy an iPhone4, an Android mobile or iGADGET, which there are more user-friendly functions.

The market share of H&F MP3 players from March 2010 to February 2011 was lower than iGADGET MP3 players. Between March and August, there were fluctuating sales, and this was followed by a steady decline to 15% until January 2011. Sales then decreased to the lowest point of just 13% in February 2011. In contrast, there was a steady rise in market shares in iGADGET MP3 players from March to June before they dropped dramatically to 53% until November. Sales then rebounded to 63% in February 2011.
The reason for this was the old TV star as a spokesperson of our product. Felix Chan, a 49-year old TV star, has been our spokesperson for three years. His image may not match our product. This effect of this might lower the attraction of our product and affect our sales and profit.
4. Conclusion
Overall, it appears that the competitiveness of H&F MP3 players is lower than iGADGET MP3 player. This is related to the issues of design, function, headphone quality and spokesperson as the findings clearly indicated.
The limited choices of colours and unfashionable design might discourage the users to constantly support our product. In addition, the inability of user-friendly function increases the users’ dissatisfaction of our product. Besides, the manufacturing of headphone in Malaysia is lower quality than the manufacturing place in Korea of the iGADGET.
